Unlocking Chronic Illness Recovery: The Crucial Role of Detox and Avoiding Environmental Toxins


One common denominator we have seen across the current epidemic of chronic illness is toxicity. There are approximately 86,000 man-made chemicals in the environment. Every time you eat, drink water (yes, even filtered water), take a shower, or breathe in the air, you’re getting exposed to toxins. They hide out in your system and accumulate over the years. This leads to inflammation, which eventually turns into chronic fatigue, irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety, insomnia, etc., and can eventually lead to autoimmune diseases like MS, Parkinson’s, and cancer.

And guess what loves toxins? Parasites, Lyme and co-infections, various molds, and viruses, including Epstein-Barr, herpes, and even “the virus.” Then there are the Retroviruses, Prions, and others. But here’s the shocker–those lurking viruses and infections are trying to help us. Believe it or not, our bodies are more of a symbiotic collection of ‘bugs’ than we are people (read ‘Missing Microbes’). It’s the underlying toxicity we house that allows the bugs to exist in the first place, and it can also allow them to thrive–and when they thrive, they negatively affect your health. So, if we properly detox, there will be no opportunistic terrain for infections. In holistic circles, we call this cleaning up the ‘biological terrain.’’ If detox can occur in all body tissues–right down to the cellular level–there will be no food or environment for the bad stuff to become imbalanced and subsequently cause disease states.

So, just what is the biological terrain? It is the biological matrix containing a network of cells, lymphatics, intra-cellular spaces (or the jelly-like area just outside the cell), blood, glands, fascia, tissues, organs, etc.



Unfortunately, thinking that you can do a 20-or 30-day detox will only bring temporary gains. Instead, think of detox as doing a little bit every day for the rest of your life. You should make detox part of your daily routine as part of your overall preventive health strategy…



Most of us are continuously exposed to various toxins through our water supply. Just plug in your ZIP Code to this database and see what’s hiding in your tap. Now, we have seen problems with reverse osmosis systems too–they are hard to install, and maintain, and they can potentially grow mold unless maintained properly. Ultimately, because it is 100% toxin-free (including radioactive elements), perhaps the best water to drink is distilled water. How much water to drink per day? If you do not have any serious medication conditions such as heart or kidney failure, you must drink at least half your body weight in ounces per day. For example, if you weigh 160 pounds, you should be drinking around 80 ounces a day.

The best strategy is to avoid as many toxins as possible. But if you are contemplating a detox or are already on a detox program, one critical protocol to add is taking various binders. They work exactly how you would expect–they bind the bad stuff you’re releasing and pull them safely out of your system. If you have been on binders for some time and are tired of taking them, we now have intelligent carbon-based technologies* that are a bit easier to take (they don’t bind minerals as other binders do, and you can take them with food).
